A neoclassical Lutheran cathedral completed in 1852 that dominates Senate Square in central Helsinki, its white stuccoed facade and green copper domes forming one of the most recognisable images of the Finnish capital. Designed by Carl Ludwig Engel, the building sits atop a broad flight of granite steps that descend to the square, creating a monumental urban composition. The square and its surrounding Empire-style buildings function as the civic heart of the city.
