Katajanokka is a historic peninsula district of Helsinki east of the market square, known for its striking Art Nouveau architecture. Around the turn of the 20th century, ornate apartment blocks with towers, turrets and carved stone details rose across the newly built quarter, giving it one of Europe's finest concentrations of the style. The red-brick Uspenski Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in the Nordic countries, crowns a rocky rise above the harbour. A former prison is now a hotel, and visitors stroll the elegant streets.
