Behind the roar of the modern megacity, Historic Cairo preserves one of the oldest and greatest Islamic urban landscapes anywhere. Founded in the 10th century, the city rose to become the centre of the Islamic world, reaching a golden age in the 14th century under the Mamluks, and its skyline still bristles with minarets above ancient mosques, madrasas, bathhouses and fountains. UNESCO inscribed Historic Cairo on the World Heritage List in 1979.
