This historic thoroughfare running through the heart of Islamic Cairo is lined with one of the densest concentrations of medieval Islamic architecture in the world, spanning the Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman eras. Restored as a pedestrian axis, it links mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, merchant houses and public fountains along a route once central to the walled city. Walking its length passes complexes built by successive rulers over nearly a thousand years.
