Built in the early sixteenth century by one of the last Mamluk sultans, this complex faces itself across a narrow lane near the Al-Azhar area, with a mosque and madrasa on one side and a mausoleum and lodge on the other. The tall facades are banded in red and white stone and topped by an elaborate minaret. The mausoleum wing now hosts regular performances of Sufi whirling and traditional music in its vaulted hall. Its position at a crossroads of the old bazaar district makes it a lively cultural landmark.
