This eighteenth-century mosque stands directly opposite the great Al-Azhar mosque and was built by a powerful Mamluk commander during the Ottoman period. Its design blends Cairene tradition with Ottoman features, including a single pencil-shaped minaret and a raised prayer hall set above a row of shops whose rents supported the foundation. The elevated position gives it a prominent presence on the busy square. As a late Ottoman addition to the historic religious heart of the city, it illustrates the continuity of monumental patronage.
