This large Mamluk complex on al-Muizz Street was built in the late thirteenth century and combines a mausoleum, a madrasa and a hospital within a single monumental facade. The mausoleum chamber is celebrated for its towering interior, inlaid marble panels and a richly decorated wooden dome supported on granite columns. The associated hospital was among the most important medical institutions of the medieval Islamic world. Stained glass and geometric ornament represent a high point of early Mamluk architecture and reward slow inspection.
