Built at the end of the fourteenth century on al-Muizz Street, this complex served as a mosque, madrasa and mausoleum for the first Circassian Mamluk sultan. Its facade is decorated with bands of carved stone and a striking portal, while the interior courtyard is surrounded by four vaulted halls for the teaching of the schools of law. The prayer hall features a painted and gilded ceiling supported on porphyry columns, and the burial chamber lies beneath a stone dome. It stands amid a cluster of major Mamluk monuments in the old city.
