Standing beside the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and facing Al-Azhar, this mosque is among the holiest Islamic sites in Egypt, traditionally said to hold the head of the Prophet's grandson Husayn. The current structure is largely nineteenth century, with a slender minaret and a gothic-influenced gateway added under later rulers. Its plaza is a focal point of the surrounding quarter, especially crowded during religious festivals and Ramadan nights. The bustling cafes and shops around it make the area one of the liveliest in the historic city.
