Originally built as a dense settlement for wartime refugees on the hillside above central Busan, Gamcheon has been transformed since 2009 by an arts regeneration project that has installed murals, sculptures, and small galleries throughout its stepped alleyways. The terraced houses, painted in vivid pastels and arranged in tightly interlocking rows, provide one of Busan's most distinctive photography subjects when viewed from above.
