Boudhanath is among the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, located on the ancient trade route northeast of central Kathmandu. The stupa's circular mandala base and massive white dome attract Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims who circumambulate the structure daily with prayer wheels and incense. The surrounding neighbourhood is home to dozens of Tibetan monasteries and thangka painting workshops. Evening kora (circumambulation) sessions at sunset, with the stupa illuminated and bells ringing, are a powerful sensory experience.
