The Gokarneshwar, or Gokarna Mahadev, is a tiered Shiva temple on the banks of the Bagmati River northeast of Kathmandu, an important site during the Kushe Aunsi festival honouring fathers. The temple courtyard is remarkable for its dense collection of stone sculptures of deities set into surrounding walls, forming an open-air catalogue of Hindu iconography. River ghats descend to the water where rituals are performed, and a forested reserve lies nearby.
