Pashupatinath is the most sacred Hindu temple complex in Nepal, dedicated to Shiva, situated on the banks of the Bagmati River in eastern Kathmandu. The main golden-roofed pagoda dates to the 17th century in its present form, though the site has been venerated for far longer. Open cremation ghats line the riverbank and remain visible to non-Hindu visitors from the opposite bank. Sadhu ascetics in saffron robes gather on the terraced steps, making the complex a rich subject for documentary and portrait photography.
