The Narayanhiti Palace Museum occupies the former royal residence of Nepal's Shah dynasty, opened to the public after the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The mid-twentieth-century palace preserves state reception rooms, thrones and private quarters largely as they were left. A stark point of interest is the marked site of the 2001 royal massacre, now a memorial garden. Visitors move through a fixed route past coronation regalia, diplomatic gifts and portraits, gaining a close view of how Nepal's rulers lived in their final decades.
