Time itself is measured from Greenwich, where the Old Royal Observatory — built by Christopher Wren with Robert Hooke — crowns a park first sketched by André Le Nôtre. Below stand Inigo Jones's Queen's House, England's first Palladian building, and Wren's magnificent former Royal Naval College beside the Thames, an ensemble distilling the nation's artistic and scientific ambition in the 17th and 18th centuries. UNESCO inscribed Maritime Greenwich in 1997.
