This riverside complex at Greenwich, largely designed by Christopher Wren, was built as a hospital for aged and injured seamen and later served as a naval training college. Its symmetrical Baroque courts frame a deliberate view up to the Queen's House and Greenwich Park beyond. The Painted Hall, decorated over nineteen years by James Thornhill, is one of the grandest painted interiors in Europe and once hosted the lying-in-state of Nelson. The site anchors the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage area.
