Hradčany is the castle district of Prague, the historic quarter that grew up around Prague Castle on the heights above the river. Originally a separate town for the servants and nobility attached to the royal court, it retains a stately, uncrowded atmosphere of palaces, monastic complexes and the arcaded Loreto shrine. Its focal point is the vast castle precinct enclosing St. Vitus Cathedral, the largest church in the country. Cobbled squares and grand aristocratic residences line the approach from the Lesser Town below.
