The Gran Teatro Nacional in the San Borja district of Lima opened in 2011 as Peru's flagship modern performing arts venue, a sleek building near the National Library and other cultural institutions. Its main hall, seating around 1,400, was designed with advanced acoustics and staging for opera, symphony, ballet and drama. It quickly became the principal home for the country's national orchestra, choir and ballet. The contemporary architecture, with a glass facade that glows at night, contrasts with Lima's older colonial theatres.
