A landscaped square in the Retiro district of Buenos Aires, this park slopes down toward the old railway terminals and is named for the independence hero José de San Martín. His equestrian statue crowns the higher ground, and mature rubber and jacaranda trees shade the curving paths designed in a nineteenth-century style. Along one edge stands a stark memorial to the fallen of the Falklands conflict. Grand mansions and the Kavanagh building surround the square, which remains a favored spot for office workers and strollers.
