The oldest of the congressional office buildings on Capitol Hill, this Beaux-Arts structure serves members of the House of Representatives. Completed in 1908 to relieve crowding in the Capitol itself, it wraps around a central courtyard and is fronted by a grand colonnade of paired columns. A domed ceremonial rotunda and marble staircases mark its main entrances. Named for a long-serving Speaker of the House, it connects to the Capitol by an underground passage and remains a working office building.
