Robert A. Taft Memorial

This memorial on the grounds north of the Capitol honors Senator Robert A. Taft, a leading conservative lawmaker of the mid-twentieth century. Dedicated in 1959, it features a slender white marble bell tower rising above a bronze statue of the senator, set within a small landscaped plaza. The carillon in the tower chimes on the quarter hour, its bells cast to ring across the surrounding grounds. As one of the few memorials to a member of Congress, it occupies a distinctive niche among the capital's commemorative landmarks.
