This large bronze memorial at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool below the Capitol honors the Union general and president Ulysses S. Grant. Completed in 1922, its central equestrian statue of Grant sits atop a marble pedestal flanked by dramatic sculptural groups of cavalry and artillery charging into battle. The dynamic figures, with straining horses and struggling soldiers, count among the most ambitious military sculptures in the country. It anchors the axis toward the Lincoln Memorial.
