Occupying a curving limestone building at the eastern end of the National Mall, this Smithsonian museum is devoted to the cultures, histories, and living communities of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Opened in 2004, its architecture evokes wind-sculpted rock and is surrounded by wetlands, meadows, and cropland plantings that recall pre-contact landscapes. Galleries present objects, oral traditions, and contemporary art curated with Native communities. The Mitsitam Cafe serves regional Indigenous cuisine.
