This memorial stands before the old royal palace, now the Hellenic Parliament, overlooking Syntagma Square in Athens. Inaugurated in 1932, it takes the form of a stone relief carved into the terrace wall depicting a dying ancient Greek warrior, flanked by inscriptions honouring Greeks who died for their country. Guarding it are the Evzones, ceremonial soldiers in traditional dress who perform a slow, stylised changing of the guard on the hour that draws crowds all day.
