The largest medieval-style Orthodox church in Athens serving as the metropolitan cathedral of the Russian community, this 11th-century foundation was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century in Byzantine revival form. Its brick facade, blind arches and broad dome dominate a corner near Ermou Street. Once part of a monastery, the church was granted to the Russian congregation and richly decorated with murals and iconostasis in the eastern tradition.
