Set inside the Iliou Melathron, the ornate former mansion of archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann on Panepistimiou Street, this museum displays coins, medals and monetary artefacts spanning from the earliest Greek city-state issues to modern times. The building itself is a draw, with painted ceilings, mosaic floors and neoclassical detailing designed by Ernst Ziller. Visitors move through rooms tracing how coinage recorded rulers, gods and civic identity across the ancient Mediterranean.
