This Catholic cathedral, completed in 1905, was once admired as one of the finest Renaissance-style church buildings in the country, with a grand domed and colonnaded design by architect Francis Petre. The 2011 earthquake caused severe structural damage, and the building's long-term future has been the subject of debate and stabilisation work. Its classical stone facade and dome remain a notable presence in the southern part of the central city. The cathedral is a listed heritage structure of national significance.
