This historic public square beside the Avon River is one of the oldest open spaces in Christchurch, laid out in the earliest days of the settlement as a market place. It contains statues of Queen Victoria and explorer James Cook, a fountain, and mature trees, with the town hall on its edge. Restored after earthquake damage, the landscaped square offers a peaceful riverside setting near the city centre. Its heritage monuments and greenery make it a well-used civic space.
