This performing-arts complex beside the Avon River, opened in 1972, is celebrated for the acoustics of its main auditorium and its distinctive modernist design by architects Warren and Mahoney. Damaged in the earthquakes, it underwent a major restoration and reopened to host orchestral concerts, conferences and civic events. Its circular auditorium, foyers and riverside setting are regarded as landmarks of New Zealand architecture. The reopening was seen as an important milestone in the central city's revival.
