Founded in the 1860s, this museum beside the Botanic Gardens holds important collections spanning natural history, Antarctic exploration, Maori and colonial artefacts, and decorative arts. Its Gothic Revival stone building is itself a heritage landmark of central Christchurch. Notable displays have included material relating to early Antarctic expeditions launched from the region and a recreated colonial street. The institution has undergone redevelopment and seismic strengthening to secure its historic home for future generations.
