The mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland stands in the central city and is one of the oldest churches in the country still in use. Built in Gothic Revival style from the 1840s onward and enlarged over subsequent decades, it features a timber-lined interior, stained glass and a fine organ. A major restoration in the 2000s strengthened and refurbished the historic fabric while adding a modern crypt and gathering space. It remains an active place of worship and a heritage landmark amid the modern city.
