This large public square in central Auckland serves as a venue for concerts, markets, festivals and civic gatherings. Bordered by the town hall and the Aotea Centre performing-arts complex, it forms the city's main open-air event space. A carved Maori gateway marks one entrance, reflecting the square's name and cultural significance. Redeveloped in recent years, the paved plaza links the Queen Street shopping strip with the theatres and civic buildings around it.
