This telecommunications tower crowns Black Mountain, the wooded hill that overlooks central Canberra. Completed in 1980, its tapering concrete shaft rises to observation galleries that once gave visitors sweeping views across the planned city, Lake Burley Griffin and the surrounding ranges. The tower carries broadcast and mobile services for the region and is a prominent feature of the capital's skyline, visible from much of the city below. Trails through the surrounding nature reserve climb to its base through dry eucalypt forest.
