This restrained neoclassical building served as the seat of federal parliament from 1927 until 1988, when the newer Parliament House opened on the hill behind it. Today it houses the Museum of Australian Democracy, where preserved chambers, party rooms and the prime minister's office evoke six decades of political life. Exhibitions trace the story of Australian democracy, protest and citizenship, and the front lawns hold the Aboriginal Tent Embassy established in 1972.
