This artificial lake forms the ceremonial heart of Canberra, created in 1963 by damming the Molonglo River as part of Walter Burley Griffin's plan for the capital. Its shores string together many of the city's landmarks, from the National Library to the carillon and the Parliamentary Triangle. The Captain Cook Memorial Jet shoots a tall plume of water into the air on Central Basin, and cycle paths ring the entire lake. Rowers, sailors and paddlers use the water year-round, and the surrounding parklands host festivals, picnics and the spring.
