Founded in 1946, this leafy research university occupies the Acton peninsula on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin. Its wooded campus mixes mid-century academic buildings with modern research institutes and is dotted with public sculpture and shady eucalypt lawns. Landmarks include the University House residential college, the Sir Roland Wilson Building and the astronomy connection at nearby Mount Stromlo. Visitors can stroll the grounds, view the drill hall art gallery and enjoy cafes popular with students.
