This eclectic office tower on Avenida de Mayo was completed in 1923 to designs by Italian architect Mario Palanti, who structured the building as an architectural allegory of Dante's Divine Comedy. Its 22 floors are divided into hell, purgatory and paradise, culminating in a lighthouse dome once meant to communicate with a twin tower in Montevideo. Visitors take guided tours to the cupola, where a panorama sweeps across the historic centre. The Latin inscriptions and cosmological proportions reward a closer look.
