Set in the Plaza del Congreso facing the national parliament in Buenos Aires, this grand marble and bronze monument commemorates the congresses of 1813 and 1816 that advanced Argentine independence. A tall central group crowned by a seated figure of the Republic rises above sculptures representing the Andes, the sea, rivers and the pampas, together with lions and other allegories, with a large fountain before it. Inaugurated in 1914, it marks kilometer zero of the country's road network, and the plaza is a frequent protest site.
