Located in the U Street corridor, this memorial honors the roughly two hundred thousand African American soldiers and sailors who served in the Union forces during the Civil War. At its center stands a bronze sculpture called The Spirit of Freedom, depicting uniformed soldiers and a family scene. A curved wall of stainless-steel panels lists the names of the men who served in the United States Colored Troops. A small associated museum nearby interprets their contributions and the broader history of the regiments.
