The walled royal enclosure of the Buganda kingdom in Kampala surrounds the Kabaka's residence and includes gates, courtyards and heritage structures across Mengo hill. The enclosure witnessed dramatic events during twentieth-century political upheavals, when it was stormed by government forces. Today parts of the grounds are open to guided visits recounting royal ceremony and Buganda's history. The site conveys the enduring role of the kingdom within modern Uganda among the capital's western hills.
