Thatch, reed, wood and wattle — not stone — form the great domed structure of Muzibu Azaala Mpanga at Kasubi, where four Kabakas of Buganda lie buried. Built as a palace in 1882 and made the royal burial ground two years later, the hilltop compound above Kampala remains a living centre of Ganda belief and identity, surrounded by farmland worked in traditional ways. UNESCO inscribed the tombs in 2001.
