This island in the Nile at the southern end of central Cairo has been settled since ancient times and holds several historic landmarks, including the medieval Nilometer at its southern tip and a former royal palace turned museum surrounded by gardens. Densely built residential neighborhoods cover much of its length, connected to both banks by bridges. Traditionally associated in legend with the finding of the infant Moses among the reeds, the island combines everyday urban life with pockets of significant heritage in a compact riverine setting.
