This ancient Coptic church in Old Cairo is dedicated to an early Christian martyr whose relics are traditionally kept here. Built in the early medieval period and repeatedly restored, it follows a basilica plan with a finely carved wooden screen separating the sanctuary from the nave. The church sits within the walled Christian quarter beside other historic sanctuaries and the Coptic Museum, forming part of a tightly knit religious enclave. Its old woodwork, icons and inlaid screens illustrate the devotional art of Egypt's Coptic community.
