Set within the Christian quarter of Old Cairo, this synagogue occupies a building with roots in the medieval period and long served the city's Jewish community. It became internationally famous for the discovery of its geniza, a storeroom that preserved hundreds of thousands of medieval manuscripts and documents that transformed the study of Mediterranean Jewish life. The interior retains a restored sanctuary with decorated woodwork and a raised reading platform.
