This early sixteenth-century mosque in the Darb al-Ahmar district was built by a Mamluk governor who defected to the Ottomans, and it straddles the period of transition between the two regimes. The complex incorporates an older palace and a public fountain, forming an unusual grouping along the street toward the Citadel. Its carved stone dome and decorated facade reflect late Mamluk craftsmanship, while some details anticipate Ottoman taste. Part of a conserved streetscape of monuments, it illustrates the shifting currents of the era.
