This small mosque inside the Citadel was the first Ottoman-style mosque built in Cairo, dating from the early sixteenth century after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt. Its compact plan is crowned by a central dome surrounded by half-domes and a slender pencil-shaped minaret, marking a clear departure from earlier Mamluk forms. The interior retains painted decoration on its domes and a courtyard shaded by arcades. Often overlooked beside the larger monuments of the fortress, it is an important marker of the transition to Ottoman rule.
