This domed monument near the Sultan Hassan square honors Mostafa Kamel, a fiery orator and journalist who became a leading voice of Egyptian nationalism in the early twentieth century before his early death. Built in a revivalist Islamic style, the mausoleum also gathers the tombs of several other figures of the independence movement. Its central chamber displays memorabilia and inscriptions commemorating their careers. Amid the medieval monuments below the Citadel, it links the ancient fabric of the city to the modern struggle for self-rule.
