Standing opposite the Sultan Hassan complex below the Citadel, this large mosque was commissioned in the nineteenth century and completed in the early twentieth, blending Mamluk revival forms with modern construction. It functions partly as a royal mausoleum and holds the tombs of members of Egypt's ruling dynasty, including King Farouk, as well as the last Shah of Iran. The interior is richly decorated with colored marble, gilded ceilings and elaborate lamps.
