This fourteenth-century Mamluk mosque and madrasa stands close to the Ibn Tulun mosque and is distinguished by an unusually high dome and elegant proportions. Built by a powerful amir, its plan follows the four-hall arrangement for teaching the schools of Islamic law, arranged around a central court. The interior retains fine marble, stucco decoration and a carved minbar. Its slender, tall silhouette makes it a notable feature of the skyline in this dense historic area, often visited together with its more famous neighbor.
