This mosque and shrine in the southern part of the historic city is dedicated to a revered female descendant of the Prophet who settled and died in Egypt in the eighth century and is venerated as a patron of the city. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, the present structure enshrines her tomb beneath a dome, drawing steady streams of pilgrims. Its annual festival fills the surrounding streets with celebration. As one of the most important devotional sites in Cairo, it remains a living center of popular piety.
